Website handover: the files, accounts and checks you should receive

A finished website should be understandable and recoverable. Agree the ownership and handover evidence before the final milestone.

A website handover should let the owner operate the service and make the next decision. Receiving a live URL is useful, but it does not explain hosting access, backups, licences or how another developer can maintain the project. Define the handover while agreeing the scope.

For an independent contractor web developer, handover is part of the project rather than an optional final conversation. Request a file manifest, configuration examples without secrets and instructions for the common publishing tasks. Close freelance web developer projects with a demonstration of access, backups and the next maintenance step.

List the accounts and owners

Record who controls the domain, hosting, email, advertising and external integrations. Accounts should use a deliberate ownership arrangement rather than a developer’s forgotten personal login. Transfer access through a secure method. Never place passwords inside a public repository or ordinary documentation.

Ask for the deployable source

Receive the files needed to recreate the website and instructions for the supported environment. Explain which folders stay local and which belong on the server. Include configuration examples without secrets. If the public site depends on a generation step, document how to run it.

Demonstrate the everyday tasks

Publish an article, update a service or manage an order using the owner’s actual workflow. Check the languages, media and relevant metadata. A short demonstration often reveals a missing instruction more quickly than a long manual. Provide a clear route for reporting defects after delivery.

Keep the verification evidence

Record which journeys and pages were tested, where the tests ran and what remains unverified. Local performance checks do not establish live field performance. A staged mail test does not prove the production inbox received a message. Clear boundaries help the next operator avoid false assumptions.

A good handover reduces dependence on memory and chat history. It makes the work reviewable, the service recoverable and future maintenance easier to plan.

Explore the service and discuss your project.
